Lesson 70 | The Melodic Dialogue & External Voice-Leading

Navigate a sophisticated interchange between the treble and bass voices, focusing on sustained resonance and silent left-hand transitions.

The Scores

Studio Insights

Shared Protagonism

In this lesson, the extreme voices (bass and soprano) share the melodic spotlight. The texture oscillates between sustained notes in one voice while the other remains active. To achieve a concert-level balance, you must ensure that the "moving" voice doesn't overshadow the "sustained" voice. This requires a high level of right-hand nuance, as the i and m fingers occasionally step in to support the main melody.

The Anti-Glissando Standard

A common technical trap in this piece occurs when using finger 4 across different frets in immediate succession, such as in measures 1 and 2. To avoid an unwanted "sliding" (glissando) effect, you must practice a clean and light vertical lift before moving to the next fret. This discipline is essential for maintaining a high-fidelity sound and ensuring your melodic lines remain pure and professional.

Anchored Foundations

Efficiency in this piece is built on what doesn't move. Finger 3 acts as a vital foundation, remaining in its spot from measure 2 into measure 3. Use the shadow-fixed technique to keep this finger in contact with the string without maintaining full pressure.

The Play along

I've found that at the begining of the learning journey it can be very helpful to have a recording to follow along. Remember that you can easily change YouTube video playback speed on any device by clicking the settings gear icon, selecting Playback speed, and choosing a different speed from the menu, or even setting a custom speed.
