Lesson 45: The Three-Finger Plaqué Architecture

Elevate your polyphonic engineering by mastering the simultaneous three-finger strike (ima) against a continuous, legato bass line in C Major.

The Unified Strike (Knuckle Motion)

When executing the ima plaqué on beats 2, 3, and 4, aim to move your fingers as a single unit starting from the primary knuckles (the "big" joints). This precision ensures all three strings speak with one synchronized voice, providing a solid harmonic foundation for the bass line.

Sub-Position Breakdown

Since each left-hand position shift starts with one single note, you have the space to break the movement down into two distinct steps. By engineering these sub-positions rather than rushing into the full shape, you reduce the mental friction of the shift and maintain a fluid musical pace.

The Legato Bass Foundation

To achieve "zero break" in the bass line, you must maintain firm pressure on the fretted note until the very last micro-second before the next strike. By combining this sustained pressure with curved, hovering fingers, you ensure the resonance remains unbroken and the transition feels completely seamless.

The Play along

I've found that at the begining of the learning journey it can be very helpful to have a recording to follow along. Remember that you can easily change YouTube video playback speed on any device by clicking the settings gear icon, selecting Playback speed, and choosing a different speed from the menu, or even setting a custom speed.
