Lesson 63 | Thumb-Led Melodies & Vertical RH Navigation

Project a lyrical bass line while utilizing the index finger as a vertical guide to navigate shifts between string sets.

Studio Insights

The Lead-Singer Thumb (p)

In this texture, the thumb (p) carries the entire melodic narrative, while the im plaqué provides a soft, atmospheric pulse. To achieve professional clarity, treat the thumb as the "Lead Singer." Give the bass notes a deeper, more resonant weight while keeping the accompaniment light and strictly rhythmic.

The Vertical Guide Finger (i)

This lesson introduces a right-hand vertical shift where your i finger acts as a spatial anchor. As you move between string 3 and string 2, keep the index finger in a "Ready State" to guide the rest of the hand. This practice of using a guide finger ensures that your vertical transitions are made with absolute precision and zero wasted motion.

Strategic Anchors & Hovering

Efficiency is found in the fingers that remain still. Finger 1 remains on string 2, fret 1, throughout measures 4 and 5; keep it anchored—either as a fixed finger or shadow-fixed—to maintain your hand’s foundation.

The Play along

I've found that at the begining of the learning journey it can be very helpful to have a recording to follow along. Remember that you can easily change YouTube video playback speed on any device by clicking the settings gear icon, selecting Playback speed, and choosing a different speed from the menu, or even setting a custom speed.
