Lesson 49 | The Extended p-i-m-a Circuit
Expand your fretboard dominion by mastering a four-fret horizontal stretch and refining your triple-voice arpeggio coordination.
Studio Insights
The Four-Fret Threshold
This lesson introduces your longest horizontal stretch yet, spanning from the 2nd to the 5th fret. To manage this blueprint without tension, ensure your left-hand thumb is centered behind the neck. This provides the mechanical leverage needed for the fingers to reach their targets with precision and ease.
Melodic Projection (a vs. im)
Just like in the previous lesson, your ring finger (a) is the primary melodic source. Focus on giving more volume to the "top" of the arpeggio while keeping the i-m accompaniment subdued. This nuance in your right-hand touch is what separates a mechanical exercise from a professional-grade performance.
Strategic Anticipation (Measures 3 & 5)
Mastery of difficult transitions is built on "pre-thinking." To navigate into measure 3 and measure 5 seamlessly, practice preparing fingers 2 and 4 as early as possible during the preceding measures. This habit of early preparation eliminates the friction of the shift and ensures your arpeggio "engine" never misses a beat.
The Play along
I've found that at the begining of the learning journey it can be very helpful to have a recording to follow along. Remember that you can easily change YouTube video playback speed on any device by clicking the settings gear icon, selecting Playback speed, and choosing a different speed from the menu, or even setting a custom speed.
