Lesson 45: The Gateway to Three-finger Plaqué

In Lesson 45, we reach a significant milestone in Sagrera’s Book 1: your first encounter with the three-finger plaqué technique.

The structure of this piece is a study in symmetry. Each measure opens with a thumb-driven bass note, followed by three instances of the i-m-a fingers plucking simultaneously. Coordinating these three fingers is a vital foundation for both classical and fingerstyle guitar, but it requires a high level of precision.

Because your fingers are naturally different lengths and shapes, producing a perfectly balanced, simultaneous sound takes time. Approach this lesson as a process of refinement. Be patient with the initial friction of the movement and focus on the nuance of your touch rather than your speed.

Enjoy the unfolding of this new skill—it’s a foundational step toward true mastery.

Tips and Advice

📐 The Anatomy of Touch

Because your fingers vary in length and shape, use slow motion to find the precision needed for a perfectly unified sound. Focus on all three strings speaking as one voice.

⏳ Incremental Alignment

Accept the initial friction of this new movement; true mastery comes from focusing on the quality of the strike rather than the speed. Be patient as your hand adapts to this new blueprint.

🔔 The Resonant Pulse

Maintain a strong, independent thumb to anchor the bass, allowing the i-m-a fingers to create a clear and nuanced chordal texture on the upper strings

The Play along

I've found that at the begining of the learning journey it can be very helpful to have a recording to follow along.

Remember that you can easily change YouTube video playback speed on any device by clicking the settings gear icon, selecting Playback speed, and choosing a different speed from the menu, or even setting a custom speed.
